A great holiday concert centerpiece. This piece combines two carols from the European region of Burgundy, historically situated in modern-day France and Switzerland. Familiar tunes, Sing We Now of Christmas and Pat-a-Pan are characterized by their simple melodies and similar modal harmonies. Sounds of the past and of the present are woven together in this lively fantasia.

Two Burgundian Carols was composed in 2008 for Jerry Junkin and the Dallas Wind Symphony.

Your new favorite march! Light in tone but technically virtuosic, Potbellied Polka is in many ways a play on traditional march form.  The piece is driven by a series of irregular melodies and lopsided bass lines, combined with shifting harmonies and time signatures.  Awkwardness and lyricism collide in the form of an extended baritone saxophone solo, one of the centerpieces of the work. Potbellied Polka received its premiere performance on December 2nd, 2005 by the Hartt School of Music Wind Ensemble under the direction of Glen Adsit.

BASIN STREET BLUE

Ever since I bought my first recording of Louis Armstrong as a kid, I think I always knew I’d write a piece based on this city famous for its history, its music, and its people. Basin Street Blue attempts to see the city through the lens of our present racial struggles. Oh, it’s still a fun piece of music. And you can still hear the street-corner Dixieland band jamming and the soulful tunes hummed in the alleyways. But now it’s more complicated, and possibly, a little more honest.

Arrangement for medium-advanced Symphonic Band with Alto Saxophone feature solo

Originally penned in 2004 for the Dallas Wind Symphony and recorded in 2011, this arrangement of Mel Torme’s holiday classic, The Christmas Song has been a regular holiday favorite of this highly-regarded ensemble. Conductor Jerry Junkin once suggested it should be subtitled “Christmas in Las Vegas” for its flash and range of jazz styles. This newly edited version was completed in 2015.

Concert March

Young musicians will enjoy the minor key at the beginning of this Grade 2 march. Some simple syncopation and counterpoint add interest and charm to this light march reminiscent of Sousa's Manhattan Beach March.

THE TELL-TALE HEART

THE TELL-TALE HEART

I have long had a fascination with Edgar Allan Poe’s famous short story The Tell-Tale Heart (1843). Vexed by an old man’s vulture-like eye, the story’s unstable narrator stalks and kills this innocent man. He is soon driven mad by the perceived sound of the dead man’s beating heart. This piece retells Poe’s story in three musical sections, using ensemble-wide "heartbeat" drums at the piece's climax. The Tell-Tale Heart is a great way to get younger players' "feet wet” playing more modern-sounding, somewhat chromatic music.
